About the 1 oz Silver American Eagle

The obverse shows Adolph Weinman's Walking Liberty, first used on the half dollar in 1916. Since 2021 the reverse has shown an eagle landing with an oak branch. The coin measures 40.6 mm across and has a face value of one US dollar.

Silver costs far less per ounce than gold, so it lets you hold a larger quantity of precious metal for the same budget. Silver coins from national mints carry a higher premium than silver bars, but they are widely recognised and easy to sell one coin at a time.

Frequently asked questions

How pure is the Silver American Eagle?

It is 999 fine silver and contains one troy ounce. It has been made to that standard since its launch in 1986.

What is the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 Silver Eagles?

In 2021 the US Mint changed the reverse design. Type 1 coins show a heraldic eagle and shield, and Type 2 coins show an eagle landing with an oak branch. Both contain one troy ounce of silver.

Is the Silver Eagle legal tender?

Yes. It is US legal tender with a face value of one dollar.

Why does the Silver Eagle cost more than other silver coins?

Strong demand in the US and the US Mint's own pricing usually give the Silver Eagle a higher premium than coins such as the Maple Leaf or Britannia. Buyers pay it for the coin's recognition in the US market.

Can I sell it back to you later?

Yes. We buy coins like this back at 97% of the live spot value of their fine metal content, with no fees. Request a quote on our Sell to us page, and we pay by bank transfer once we have received and checked the item.
