How the palladium price is set
Palladium is priced per troy ounce in US dollars. The LBMA Palladium Price, set twice each working day in London, is the benchmark for the physical market, and NYMEX palladium futures are the most widely followed traded contract.
Our charts show daily closing prices of palladium futures, which track the spot price closely. Prices in pounds sterling, euros, Swiss francs, Canadian dollars and UAE dirhams are converted at each day's reference exchange rate.
What moves the price of palladium
Most palladium, roughly four fifths of demand, goes into catalytic converters for petrol cars, so the palladium price is closely tied to car production and emissions rules. The growth of electric cars, which need no catalytic converter, is a long-term pressure on demand.
Supply is concentrated in two countries: Russia and South Africa together produce most of the world's palladium. Sanctions, export disruptions or mine problems in either can move the price sharply.
A volatile metal
Palladium is the most volatile of the four precious metals. It overtook gold in 2019 and rose above $3,000 an ounce in 2022, before falling sharply as car demand weakened. Because of these swings, buyers usually hold palladium as a small part of a wider precious metals holding.
The palladium price in pounds, euros and other currencies
Palladium is priced in US dollars, so we convert each day's dollar price at that day's reference exchange rate to show it in pounds sterling, euros, Swiss francs, Canadian dollars and UAE dirhams. The comparison chart above shows how the price of an ounce has changed in each currency over the same period.
