The obverse shows Augustus Saint-Gaudens' Lady Liberty striding forward with a torch, adapted from the famous 1907 Double Eagle. Since 2021 the reverse has shown a close-up of an eagle's head. The coin weighs 33.93 g, measures 32.7 mm across and has a face value of 50 US dollars.
One-ounce gold coins from national mints are the most widely recognised form of investment gold. The issuing mint stands behind each coin's weight and purity, so the 1 oz Gold American Eagle is easy to sell to bullion dealers around the world, and its price follows the gold spot price closely, with a modest premium for minting.
The 1 oz Gold American Eagle is priced live from the gold spot price plus a stated premium of 5%, in any of six currencies. At checkout your price is locked for 10 minutes while you confirm your order. You then pay by bank transfer (UK Faster Payments, SEPA or SWIFT), quoting your order number. The Gold Eagle is 22 carat: about 91.67% gold, with silver and copper added for durability. It still contains one full troy ounce of gold, which is why the coin weighs 33.93 g in total.
In 2021 the US Mint replaced the reverse design of an eagle family at their nest with a close-up portrait of an eagle's head. The obverse, Saint-Gaudens' Lady Liberty, was also refined. Coins of both designs contain the same amount of gold.
